While professional opportunities once dictated where we lived. Recent data from the
National Association of Realtors® (NAR) and United Van Lines reveals that family
connections and financial factors are the primary reasons people move.
The most Significant reason for moving today is the desire to be closer to family and
friends. Roughly 30% of people said this was their top motivation for moving. This trend
is particularly strong among retirees and remote workers who are no longer tied to an
office.
Financial factors remain a close second. Approximately 21% of people move to find
more “home for their money,” seeking out areas with lower taxes or a lower cost of
living.
Reasons for Moving Differ by Age.
Young adults in their 20s remain the most mobile; often relocating for school and
early-career opportunities.
In contrast, older adults, and those with higher education, are often prioritizing specific
amenities like outdoor space and quieter neighborhoods.
Whether it is finding a bigger backyard, lowering your cost of living, or being closer to grandchildren, people are focusing on enhancing their overall quality of life.
