We all have things we’d like to improve about ourselves. Whether you have set resolutions already or not, take a look at the tips below for a little extra guidance.
Keep in mind, this is about slow, consistent change, not seeing infomercial level instant results.
Set Small, Realistic Resolutions!
When we say “small” we mean SMALL! Your motivation fluctuates from moment to moment. If the goal you set for yourself requires more motivation, than you have at the moment, you’ll be at greater risk of giving up.
For example, if you would like to get in better shape and have failed in the past to maintain a workout routine, try setting a goal of one push-up a day or similar.
If you have more motivation in the moment, go ahead and do more. As long as you do at least one, you will achieve your goal!
Focus on Behavior Not End Results.
Having a picture of where you want to eventually end up in your mind is great but focus on setting resolutions for a specific behavior that will get you there.
When we focus mostly on the end result, it can be easy to become discouraged when we feel we aren’t progressing quickly enough to become discouraged when we feel we aren’t progressing quickly enough.
Focus on One Behavior at a time.
The goal is to make improving yourself as doable as possible. Focusing on only one behavior will help you stay focused and increase your chances of success. Once you feel the behavior has become a routine, add another one.
Tie Your Behavior to Something You’re Already Doing.
Do your push-ups right after getting dressed in the morning or read some of a book while waiting for your toast to be done. When you link new behaviors to ones you are already doing, your chance for success improves dramatically!
More than anything, be kind to yourself. Give yourself some slack if you miss a day or “cheat” on your diet a bit.
We aren’t perfect and self-improvement is all about long term averages, not short-term gains.
